Why Celebrating Your Own Birthday Is Important

The Value of Community, Friendships, and Self-Love

One of the most beautiful things about being human is our ability to form deep connections with others. Friends and community provide us with a sense of belonging, support, and a shared experience of life. Having people to lean on during tough times or to celebrate with during the good times is incredibly valuable.

I attended one of my good friend’s birthday celebrations recently and I realized that birthdays are a great opportunity to celebrate these connections and relationships too. They give us a chance to reflect on the people who have been there for us throughout the year and to show appreciation for the impact they have had on our lives.

While many of us make sure to celebrate the birthdays of our loved ones—especially our kids, I feel we often forget to do the same for ourselves. But I hope this serves as a reminder that it’s just as important to celebrate our own birthdays as it is to celebrate the birthdays of others.

Making time for ourselves on our birthdays is a way of acknowledging our own importance and value in the world. It's a chance to reflect on the past year, set intentions for the year ahead, and give ourselves the love and attention that we deserve. We can do something that we love, treat ourselves to something special, or simply spend time with the people who bring us joy.

Community and friendships are invaluable aspects of our lives, and birthdays are a perfect opportunity to celebrate these connections. Let's not forget to celebrate our own birthdays and acknowledge our own worth and importance. Just like we celebrate the birthdays of our children, we should also make sure to celebrate our own, because we all deserve to be celebrated.
